Joanne Fluke - Fudge Cupcake Murder

This is the fifth book in the Hannah Swensen mystery series. After reading the previous book I was very curious about what would happen with Hannah and Mike and Norman. Would they propose? So I started this one right away.

Fudge Cupcake Murder

For Hannah, life seems to be lacking a certain flavor lately. Maybe it’s the local sheriff’s election that’s got her down. For years, Sheriff Grant’s been the iron hand in town. But now, Hannah’s brother-in-law Bill is giving the old blowhard the fight of his long, dubious career – and Grant’s not taking it well, especially once the polls show Bill pulling ahead.

But before anyone can taste victory, things go sour. While Hannah’s emptying the trash, she makes a very unappetizing discovery: Sheriff Grant’s body in the Dumpster behind the high school where she’s teaching her cooking class. And as if that weren’t bad enough, the poor man still has fudge frosting on his shirt from one of her cupcakes.

The number one – and only – suspect is Bill, but Hannah’s not swallowing it. Plenty of people had reason to hate Sheriff Grant. Soon, Hannah’s dishing up scandalous secrets, steaming hot betrayals, and enough intrigue to keep the gossip mill at The Cookie Jar going through several pots of decaf. And the closer Hannah gets to the truth, the closer she gets to smoking out a murderer with a very nasty recipe for silencing people…

Well, to answer my own question, the dreamhouse is being build, but no proposals have been made yet. Even worse, Norman is away on a dentist convention, where he meets his former fiancée, and Mike is in the doghouse for thinking Bill has murdered their boss.
And Mike seems to be dating some one else, a pretty blond secretary working for him, or doesn’t he see the coming on she does like Hannah can? He even tells Hannah she should use her recipe! What a stupid man to even suggest something like that!
With Bill at home (being suspended from work), Andrea is getting nuts because of all the househusband things Bill is doing, cleaning and throwing things away, and being on her lip all the time. So she wants to help Hannah to clear Bills name, and of course find the real murderer. But Andrea is confounded to the house by the Doctor pretty soon, and can’t assist Hannah with everything anymore.
Then the publisher who wants Hannah to write a Lake Eden cookbook wants to publish three months earlier, and Hannah will have little time to finish everything. Her cooking class is trying out all the recipes her fellow residents have submitted, figuring out the flaws and improving them. But the biggest challenge is the recipe for Fudge Chocolate Cupcake, with a secret ingredient! Can Hannah and Lisa figure out what it is in time for publication?

About the murderer, I figured out who did it a lot faster than the why. But it was very interesting to learn what Hannah found out about previously mentioned characters in this series. The romance part is almost non existent, but now Hannah’s mother, Delores, is dating a mysterious and romantic guy. Hmm wonder what will happen with that…
And Moishe plays a big part in this book.

And there is actually a recipe I might try out sometimes, the Hole in One. Baking bread and an egg at the same time. Sounds easy and fast …
But baking an egg is not really cooking, is it? Or did Joanne Fluke convert me?
